I don't know if anyone caught the shows "Starved" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" on the FX network last night, but if you missed it you missed something great. I certainly wouldn't have said this three or so years ago, but it looks like FX is trying to become the best thing on television. While the big three networks are failing and stumbling around with more rehashed reality shows and idiotic situation comedies, FX is (and has been) taking chances with some remarkable television. You have to appreciate a network that will roll the dice with things like The Shield, Nip Tuck, Rescue Me, and an eleven-hour King of the Hill marathon... but apparently we ain't seen nothin' yet.
Starved, in case you missed all of the media hype, focuses on the lives of four people with eating disorders living in New York City. To describe this show as "pushing the limits of network television decency standards" would be like calling Hitler an "Anti-Semite." However, it's free of the burden of obvious shock value. Instead it's just terribly funny and features network televisions most graphic, and amusing oral sex scene.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is another future cult classic, tackling the race issue in the first episode without one second's adherence to the staunch codes of political correctness. "Ha, HA! I knew that you people were related!" May be the funniest line of the year.
So, anyway, catch it on the replay if you can, it's some serious shizznit. Oh, and come to the pants party.
