You're hearing it here first. West Virginia will be a MAJOR NCAA title contender within the next two years.
When Coach Don Nehlen turned in his headphones and walked off of Mountaineer Field in 2000, many West Virginia fans were left scratching their heads and wondering what the future would hold. The answer came like a flaming couch in the night when Rich Rodriguez came to town.
The recent realignment of the Big East had experts predicting bad things for the Mountaineers. The addition of the high powered Louisville Cardinals and the arrival of Dave Wannstedt at Pitt were supposed to spell doom for the Big East powerhouse... but someone forgot to mention that to the Mountaineers. Now, after chewing up opponents left and right Louisville became the latest victim in a 46-44 barnburner in Morgantown. In fact, looking ahead at the schedule it seems unlikely that WVU will lose another game, much less the Big East crown.

How is it happening? Well, it's happening with big plays from young players.
It's coming from Adam Bednarik, a Sophomore with a 144.8 QB rating.
It's coming from Pat White, a Freshman QB with a 131.1 rating at 304 rushing yards.
It's coming from Steve Slaton, a Freshman RB with 459 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns (five of which were against Louisville)
But, most of all it's coming from Rich Rodriguez. It's Rodriguez's unique coaching style that's throwing off defenses throughout the country and leading the should-have-been-middle-of-the-pack Mountaineers to a 20th place AP Ranking and possible BCS bid. His eagerness to run a no-huddle offense, his unwavering belief in his young talent, and his dedication to the game will lead these guys to bowl game after bowl game if they'll just listen.
Just the other day I was talking to a friend about how amazing it would have been to see Marshall competing on a Division I-A level when the offense included young, overlooked talent like Chad Pennington, Randy Moss and Byron Leftwich. We'll never get to see that, but maybe the State of West Virginia will give us a glimpse of what it could have been in the near future.
